How will the budget affect the architectural jobs market?

Although there was huge optimism within the architecture industry following Labour's election win, the first 100 days haven't so far given the dramatic uplift in architectural roles that might have been expected. There have been improvements in the last few weeks but it feels like a number of firms are now pausing recruitment until after the budget. Our most urgent jobs are therefore often working on international projects or the ultra high-end residential market which are less likely to be impacted by the new tax regime. For London firms, feedback on workload is thankfully quite positive but making business profitable is far harder as architectural fees get squeezed further. This has been highlighted by some recent research by Keir Regan-Alexander who has compared build costs to architect charge out rates since 2000.

The impact of lower fees then flows through to architectural salaries and an incredible number of architects are therefore now looking to move away from traditional practice and into more project/design management roles. Due to the higher salaries these roles command, competition is very high and generally require a number of years experience within specific sectors. A few of our latest project manager roles can be seen at the end of this newsletter.
